Chironomids

Chironomids (Insecta: Diptera) are also known as non-biting midges. Chironomid larvae are aquatic insects and occur in many (fresh)water habitats. The head capsules of these larvae are characteristic and allow identification to genus-, type or species level. As chironomids are adapted to specific climatic parameters, an analysis of chironomid head capsules can provide more information on e.g. temperature, water quality and the presence of macrophytes in water bodies.
