Caulking is the process of making the seams in a ships planking water tight by driving a fibrous material in the seam. In shipwrecks, the material that was used for caulking can be identified. Commonly, mosses, animal hair and plant fibers were used, but there are clear periodical and regional preferences. In some cases identification of the caulking material provides valuable information on the ships itinary.
