Dr. Radek Grabowski
Radek Grabowski is archeoloog en gespecialiseerd in de archeobotanie. Hij is opgeleid aan het Environmental Archaeology Laboratory aan de Universiteit van Umeå in Zweden. Na zijn Bachelor werkte hij een aantal jaar als veldarcheoloog in Ierland en behaalde hij in 2008 een Master in Environmental Archaeology aan de Universiteit van Umeå. Vanaf 2009 voerde hij hier zijn promotieonderzoek uit en verdedigde uiteindelijk in 2014 zijn proefschrift Cereal husbandry and settlement: Expanding archaeobotanical perspectives on the southern Scandinavian Iron Age. Het promotieonderzoek bestond uit case studies over Zuid-Scandinavische akkerbouw in de periode 500 BC tot AD 1000 en over het potentieel van verkoolde macroresten als informatiebron voor de inrichting van prehistorische nederzettingen. Tijdens het promotieonderzoek begon Radek zich te interesseren voor houtskool als een archeologische informatiebron en heeft Radek daarom een opleiding in houtanatomie gevolgd bij Kew Gardens in Londen.
Tussen 2016 en 2018 verdiepte Radek zich in gebruik van botanische plantenresten als een proxy voor nederzettingsactiviteiten. Hij voerde dit onderzoek uit in het kader van het postdocproject 'Prehistoric settlement archaeology in Northwestern Europe: developing integrated multidisciplinary methods', gefinancieerd door de Zweedse Onderzoeksraad.
Tussen 2008 en 2016 werkte Radek ook als docent bij het Universiteit van Umeå. Daar gaf hij les in (noord) Scandinavische prehistorie en Environmental Archaeology en was hij betrokken bij het ontwerp van het MA-programma van het Environmental Archaeology Laboratory.
Van 2018 tot 2021 werkte Radek voor BAAC in 's-Hertogenbosch, waar hij het archaeobotanische laboratorium voor het bedrijf heeft opgezet. Vanwege zijn interesse voor houtskool en de mogelijkheden van deze materiaalgroep binnen de archeologie werkt hij sinds 2022 als houtskoolspecialist bij BIAX. Daar is Radek in januari 2023 toegetreden als partner.
