Dr. Lucy Kubiak-Martens

Lucy Kubiak-Martens deed in 1990 haar doctoraal examen in de archeologie aan het Instituut voor Prehistorische Archeologie van de Universiteit van Poznan in Polen. In 1999 voltooide zij haar proefschrift in de biologie met als specialisatie archeobotanie en promoveerde aan het Instituut voor Botanie van de Poolse Academie van Wetenschappen in Krakow.

Haar huidige werk en onderzoek richten zich op archeobotanie en paleo-ecologie. Ze is gespecialiseerd in zaden- en vruchtenanalyse en de determinatie van verkoolde plantenresten als wortels, knollen, wortelstokken, enz. Zij is met name geïnteresseerd in de rol van plantaardig voedsel bij jagers/verzamelaars en vroege agrarische gemeenschappen in de gematigde streken van Europa en semi-droge streken van Afrika.

Met haar promotie-onderzoek droeg zij bij aan onze kennis over het aandeel van planten in pre-agrarische voedingsgewoonten in gematigd Europa. Haar archeobotanische gegevens komen van verschillende vindplaatsen in Polen en Denemarken, en beslaan de periode van het Laat-Paleolithicum tot het Laat-Mesolithicum. Voor haar promotie-onderzoek reisde zij naar de subarctische streken van Alaska en het Yukon Territory om de huidige flora en vegetatie te bestuderen en het gebruik van planten als voedsel in het traditionele dieet van de Athapaskan Indianen.

Tijdens haar promotie-onderzoek (tussen 1993 en 1996) volgde zij verschillende cursussen, zoals Environmental Archaeology aan het ‘Institute of Archaeology University College Londen’ (UCL), gegeven door Dr. Professor G. Hillman, The Archaeobotany of Vegetative Plant Tissue aan hetzelfde instituut onder Dr. Jon G. Hather, Macrofossil Analysis aan het Department of Geography (UCL) onder Dr. Hillary H. Birks en Quaternary Palaeoecology aan de Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam, met als lector prof. Dr. Karl-Ernst Behre. Zij nam deel aan archeologische expedities in Europa, met name op vindplaatsen in Polen (diverse Paleolithische en Mesolithische vindplaatsen), Denemarken (Tybrind Vig, Halsskov, ‘shell middens’ in Noord Jutland) en Nederland. Zij heeft ook veel ervaring met vindplaatsen in de woestijnen van Egypte (het Vroeg-Neolitische Nabta Playa, de Pre- en Vroeg-Dynastische Tell el-Fargha) en Soedan (het Vroeg-Neolithisch Kadero).
